From Storytime to Story-Making: Encouraging Your Child's Imagination

Children have incredible imaginations.

A stuffed animal can become a classroom friend. A blanket can become a superhero cape. A few blocks can become a castle.

Storytelling works in much the same way. It gives children a starting point and allows their imagination to take the story somewhere new.

At Prairie Kids Club, we love opportunities that encourage children to explore their creativity, and we're excited to share a new storytelling resource with our families.

The Importance of Imaginative Storytelling

Stories give children more than something fun to listen to. They can also create opportunities to practice language, understand emotions, make predictions, and express ideas.

Parents can make storytime interactive by asking questions like:

“What do you think will happen next?”

“Why do you think the character did that?”

“What would you do?”

“How would you change the story?”

These questions encourage children to become active participants rather than simply listeners.

Introducing Taletic™

Ask questions about the characters. Let your child predict what will happen next. Encourage them to tell you what they would do differently.

Then turn the story into a hands-on activity.

The story doesn't have to end when the screen turns off. It can become the beginning of your child's next imaginative adventure.

Finding Balance With Digital Experiences

Technology is part of everyday life for many families. Rather than focusing only on whether children are using a screen, parents can also think about what their children are doing while using it.

A storytelling experience can be more meaningful when children are encouraged to think, talk, imagine, and create—and especially when parents participate with them.

Of course, digital activities are only one part of a balanced childhood. Books, outdoor play, creative activities, pretend play, and family conversations are all important ways children learn and grow.
